![]() Darkness Descends remains to be a phenomenal album from a band with an otherwise uneven discography, and it contains many classic songs that resemble a massive leap in ambition and quality for 1986, which shows why this record has acquired such a dedicated following.ġ986 was quite a year for heavy metal, and it's especially important on the thrash side. He is noticeably more confident here than on We Have Arrived, and his delivery is nothing short of belligerent. ![]() ![]() He really adds to the unsettling atmosphere of the music. Even the worst offender of this use of verses and choruses, the exceedingly long Black Prophecies, even manages to keep you interested, because of how unpredictable this record is and how many twists there are.ĭon Doty is probably one of the more recognisable vocalists of the genre, with his range between groans and ear-piercing screams. The simplicity of the song structures is very characteristic of thrash metal, which partially contributes to how influential Darkness Descends was and still is, but don't mistake repetitiveness and simplicity for a lack of creativity or cohesion as a band. As well as this, almost every song features an iconic hook. While there is a heavy use of verse-chorus structure on this album, there are some very interesting middle sections that feature wild solos and again help administer the tension across the tracks. With this being said, the unpredictable nature and velocity of the drums coupled with the guitars is still performed with precision and musical coherency. Every song is haunting, which is evident right from the beginning, with the sheer power of the fade-in intro and the explosion of Gene Hoglan's inhuman drumming. More specifically, the riffs on this album all kick ass. This successfully builds tension and helps make the climax to the rise in tempo more memorable and gripping, rather than relying on constant speed which gets old quickly. Take the intro to Merciless Death, which is the Seven Nation Army equivalent of metal basslines. In spite of this, speed of course doesn't exclusively make music good, but Dark Angel back it up with creepy riffing and ominous, thundering alterations in tempo. The pure blistering speed of tracks like The Burning of Sodom, which exceeds 240bpm, proves the intensity and aggression of the band's new sound. Containing some of the strongest and most inspired songwriting in the entire genre, this album is groundbreaking in more ways than one. Transforming from a standard act with some melodic twists into the heaviest, darkest, fastest, ugliest thrash metal band on the face of the Earth, Darkness Descends propelled Dark Angel into an iconic status that they deserved.
